Palm Beach Libertarians oppose spending $24 million of taxpayer money on golf course

Boca Raton, Fla – The Libertarian Party of Palm Beach County has come out opposing the $24lady_golfer-free-use million purchase of the Ocean Breeze Golf Club in the Boca Tecca area of the City of Boca Raton. The Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District is in negotiations to purchase the closed golf course from a real estate developer and expects to add a hotel and golf learning center on the property.

The Libertarian Party of Palm Beach County opposes the utilization of taxpayer money on another government-owned golf course. Taxpayer money should only be used on projects that will be used by all residents and visitors, not a handful of residents and visitors. Government-run golf courses are most often a nice subsidy for relatively wealthy golfers, paid for by all the non-golfing taxpayers.

Karl Dickey, Chair of the Libertarian Party of Palm Beach County, said today, “Governments have a horrible track record with managing businesses, especially golf courses. We have seen this here in Boca Raton where the city consistently loses money on its golf course just west of the Turnpike. Thankfully, we are looking to sell the western golf course and our local governments to stay out of the golf course business.”

While the proposed sale of its money-losing western golf course is a step in the right direction, the proposed purchase of the Ocean Breeze Golf Club is a step in the wrong direction.
