Fla House Libertarian candidate, Artie Lurie responds to Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops

Libertarian Florida House District 90 candidate Artie Lurie posted today, Jly 10, 2016, on his website his response to the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops when asked his opinion on several issues. Unlike most candidates for public office, Lurie has been open about his response to campaign questionnaires by post them regularly on his campaign website. Lurie is facing incumbent Democrat Lori Berman in a two-way race for the November 8th general election.

Here are the questions and his responses:

1. Allocating resources for the Florida Pregnancy Care Network to support women seeking alternatives to abortion?

Answer: Oppose

Response: I believe in the sanctity of life. I believe in the mission to help women with finding alternatives to abortion is noble and caring. But is it noble and caring to want to receive money that has been taken by force in the form of taxes? Let he who is so full of compassion cast the first donation from his own pocket.

2. Expanding existing scholarship programs to allow parents to select the best educational opportunities for their school-aged children?

Answer: oppose

Response:  We all know that the government education system in Florida is a failure. The politicians are throwing billions of our tax dollars to “fix it” and it keeps getting worse. We need to get the government out of the education business! Once we repeal government sponsored education, we can repeal the state sales tax and cut property taxes in half! Education would be much more affordable, and would put control of our children’s education back into the hands of parents and teachers once and for all.

3. Establishing a maximum 30% annual percentage rate (APR) that payday lenders can charge?

Answer: oppose

Response: Whenever the government tries to interfere with protecting consumers the result is a failure. Price fixing by government control only drives prices up and eliminates competition. The free market is the result of all voluntary actions of individuals pursuing their own interests. Only competition will provide products and services that people need that are better quality and lower cost.

4. Ending Florida’s use of the death penalty while preserving the alternative of a life sentence without parole?

Answer: Support
Response: The state should not have the ability to kill anyone in the name of justice. Because if justice fails, then the state is committing murder.

5. Respecting First Amendment freedoms of individuals and organizations so they may continue to operate in accord with moral beliefs related to life, sexuality, and marriage?

Answer: support
Response: I am committed to the principles of Liberty, personal responsibility, and limited government. What does that mean to you? It means that you should be able to live your life as long as you don’t harm anyone or take their stuff.

6. Regulating recruiters of foreign workers to reduce labor trafficking?

Answer : oppose

Response: No. Government should not be able to regulate any business.

7. Ensuring children under the age of fourteen cannot be tried as adults?

Answer: oppose

Response: No child under the age of 18 should be tried as an adult.
